Joel and Helena are the designer maker, husband and wife team. The passionate pair create durable contemporary furnishings aimed at both homes and businesses for their company Studio Haran. The duo design and craft from their cozy farm workshop near the south coast of Cornwall.  Joel and Helena use both wood and porcelain as their main mediums, making tables, chairs, light fitings, lamps, benches. The talenented team also create bespoke commissioned pieces like a giant boombox for boardmasters festival.

The couple actually moved to Cornwall separately in order to be by the sea and attend Falmouth University and it was there that they met and not only fell in love but started their buisness Studio Haran before they had even graduated in 2014.  The main reason Joel and Helena stayed in Cornwall is the slower pace of life that a rural comminity offers. They have found the downside to this is that they sometimes fell withrawn from the market but through their clever use of the ineternet an trips to London for design fairs they have managed to find a balance that works for them.

I think it's quiet good to set up a buisness in a rural location if your doing craft type things because there's workshop spaces available on farms and things like that.  Where as in a city you may never afford to start in a workshop. ”
“ The favourite part of our work would be the designing, actually the whole beginning process of designing your product. We sort of sit there with a sketchbook together sort of snatching it off each other to draw new designs, so yeah that initial process is really fun. ”

Sustainability and longevity are the two themes rooted in every aspect of their designing and making process. Each product is designed so that when eventually it comes to the end of its life it can be broken down and separated into individual parts for recycling and as many materials as possible are sourced locally meaning Cornish timber or otherwise FSC graded timber from British suppliers, you will never discover any MDF or chipboard in their products in an attempt to assure they last both functionally and aesthetically.

The duo are planing to bring out a new line of furnishings every year but their ambition reaches much futher than this as they aim to begin more collaborative work with other traders to build more of a collective of crafters in the area who can share the work load. This will allow them to take on more commissioned projects. It is from these projects which can range from a giant boombox to a large trading stand that the pair really feel like they are being challenged and are learning about their craft.
