Joanna Bury is a gifted jewellry maker living in the small Cornish town of Penryn. It is here she makes her intricate and unique necklaces, earring’s, cuffs and rings made out of gold, silver and acrylic. Joanna’s work is very distinctive in style as her main inspiration is the idea of treating jewellry like removable tattoos. This means all her pieaces are created to cast detailed shadow patterns onto the wearers skin.

Joanna's workshop is based by the docks in Penryn and is not only home to her but two other makers, one painter and another Jewellry maker. It is from here they sell their work in their own Gallery. Cornwall is a creative place in Joanna's eyes where lots of support is offered as she has recieved help, advice and support from other crafters in the area as well as from Falmouth University where Joanna won the graduate Pre-Incubus award which helped support her financialy.
“ You've got to try these things to see if they work. For me i feel like this is what I wanted to do, it's hard work and theres a lot of work to do and it's long hours but atleast you are doing someting you want to in life and what you love to do.”
“My favourite part is designing, i'm deffinitly a designer. I enjoy getting inspiration from all areas and recording that information and turning that into something beautiful and wearable.”
Joanna's jewellry is best described as high fashion. Each piece uses the body as a backdrop to display her art and is inspired by the boldness of urban culture however they also depict a delicacy as they hover over the skin like lace. This links back to Joanna’s time spent as a lingerie designer in New York before she decidied to follow her dream and open her own buisness after retraining as a Jewellry maker back here in Cornwall.
Joanna only started her buisness last year in January after finishing her degree in siversmithing and Jewellry however it has just snowballed from there as stockists from London contacted he asking to stock her Jewellry after seeing her work at her graduate show and now having a place to make and sell her work. So in the future Joanna just wants to keep making and try new things taking her Jewellry even further. To see more of Joanna's work follow the links above.
