Heather Scott is a talented designer maker who creates contemporary handcrafted products in the heart of Cornwall inspired by real moments with real people that are made to be used over and over. Heather’s main medium is wood; creating beautifully crafted furnishings in an elegant combination of the Japanese and Scandinavian styles. Plates, bowls, spatulas, shelves, benches are all within her repertoire as her aim is always to create products that make more of the everyday.
Heather's workshop is based on a farm in Mabe and it is not only home to her but a whole group of talented craftspeople who support each other. The great community spirit Cornwall has to offer is one of the main reasons for Heather to stay in Mabe as well as the fact that Cornwall’s slower pace and cheap rent offers new independent designer makers the opportunity to build up a complete body of work that they are really proud of without the pressure of mountains of bills which if you lived in a location such as London would be a real problem.
“ Its just such a beautiful material as its always different. I could be doing wood work for a lifetime and not learn everything, its completely limitless. Its exciting. ”
Heather’s mo. for making items with a purpose began when she was young after creating a chicken coop for her chickens and other similar projects, so she decided to come to Falmouth University here in Cornwall to channel her creativity on the contemporary crafts course. However, not long into the course she met a “genious” carpenter who she interned with and it was there she learnt to use the many different types of machinery she uses today to craft her amazing furnishings.
“ I love just being able to constantly take things in the direction I want to, and it being down to just me and I’m as excited about the business of it and the making it work, that’s such a creative process in itself that it just adds to it”
Woodwork is not Heather’s only passion and over the next year she aims to expand into metal work, after starting a joint project with Toro Studios in Falmouth making exciting new products to display plants mainly using steel and wood. Heather has found many of her woodwork skills transferable to metalwork and yet at the same time its opened up a whole new skill base and is allowing her to solve some of her design challenges.
