Hazel Lawrence is a designer maker for her company, House by Hazel based out of the Tom Holland Gallery in Penryn on the south coast of Cornwall. Hazel designs and produces home wear products such as mugs, hotplates, lampshades, coasters, etc, that depict the amazing variety of exotic plant life and vibrant sea life Cornwall has to offer. Hazel’s main medium is textiles doing her own printing onto fabric and then hand sewing them onto cushions, towels and other items.
“ I knew what I liked doing but it was hard trying to find that in Cornwall and I suppose the best way for me to do what I wanted to do was to be self employed, so that is why I started up House for no other reason than that I just knew what I wanted to do and that was that. ”
Hazel's passion for creating has been around for a long time but her techniques and style were really established during her time at the University of Bristol. Now in her own workspace Hazel is constantly working towards new products and techniques through trial and error design philosophies and this is the way she has moved forward to create the work she has available today. Hazels work is not only available from Penryn but at multiple stockists all over Cornwall ranging from St Agnes to Mount Edgcumbe Park.
Hazel’s main draw to the world of textiles comes from the amazing colours you have access to when working with fabrics and this can be seen in her bold designs. However, this is not the only thing that keeps Hazel motivated in her work. In fact she loves the whole process from the moment of inspiration, to sketching, to making the work and then to seeing how the patterns she made will fit her different products. All of this is what has kept Hazel pushing forward in her craft.
“ Being an independent trader it’s great, it's kind of like the sublime to the ridiculous almost, for me anyway. As its either great or awful because it's you, especially being a creative buisness you are constantly putting that out for people to judged and either to buy or not to buy.”
Hazel regurlarly attends craft shows all over Cornwall to promote House By Hazel and show off her wonderfull products but her main aim over the next few years is to expand out of Cornwall and to get her signature pink lobster into every house, in every town, in every country of the world.
