Hannah Lawrence is a creative potter who makes eligant and simple handcrafted ceramics from her shop Folklore in Falmouth. Hannah’s work is inspired by the idea of crafting items that are both practical and pretty and so she draws her inspiration from pots throughout ancient history focusing mainly on Egyptian, Japanese and African designs. Hannah’s material of choice is stoneware and she mixes various types together to achieve the perfect blend, which she sources locally from St Agnes in an attempt to support other local businesses.

Originally Hannah used to pot in a shed alone in the middle of nowhere but after seeing an empty storefront at the Old Brewery Yard Hannah decided what she really wanted was to share her practice person to person. In that moment Folklore was created. That was two years ago and Hannah has never looked back as she enjoys getting to share her practice with new people and really talk to them about what she does and what she stands for. Which is the real people, the needs of those people and is actually where the name Folklore cames from.

"All you need to do is make this small thing to carry what you want to eat or drink, but within that limitation there's so much room for  form, colour, pattern and style and i find that really exciting."
"I really like that what you believe about the world can manifest itself through your buisness, there's just so many ways that you can make and sell things that you can really choose to be ethical."

Hannah's interest in potting began by chance eight years ago whilst living in, Australia. It was there she met an interesting potter and fell in love with clay. It was from this potter she learnt her technique called pinching which is highly uncommon in today’s pottery industry as it doesn’t require a potting wheel, making pinching a slower process. Pinching results in a rudamentary style of ceremaics which are highly functional and yet still beautiful in their simplicity and it is this that really seperates her work from others.

Folklore is situated at the Old Brewery Yard off the old high street in Falmouth (see below) so if you head over you are sure to find Hannah sitting in the shop window on her little yellow stool making her pots. Be sure to pop in and have a chat with Hannah, she will be happy to talk to you about the stories behind the pieces in her store as well as the people who made them but if you can't make it please check out the links above to find out more about Hannah pottery and the other items she sells.
