Amy Freeman is a creative and passionate wood turner who produces highly decorative and colourful bowls and plantpots from her workshop in a beautiful quiet old farmhouse in Mabe, Cornwall. Amy’s work is driven by the aim to challenge people’s opinion on the extent to which functional objects like her pots can be considered art. This comes from her fine art background which aloud her to bring forward her love of pattern and drawing and show off her lack of fear when it comes to colour on to the surface design of her unique wooden pots.
Amy's main draw to the world of being an independent trader comes from the excitement of not being limited by someone else's creativity or rules however finds it hard that more often than not she has very little money. To change this Amy has decided its time to expand her range of product and start creating larger pieces such as hanging baskets, planters and tables and to make this possible she has begun learning welding and other bits of metal work so she doesn't have to outsource the labour at extra cost.
"My dad actually said to me halfway through my third year, 'Amy I dont actually think your going to get a job' and I took that as a big sort of acceptance. Like yeah i'm going to be pennyless but self employed for probably ever."
"My use of colour has always been bright. I think that came from one day realising that i wasn't scared of colour, i'd thought just because everyone else was scared of colour that i was scared of colour and then i started doing it and I realised on actually no i'm not scared of colour at all. "
Amy originallly studied art but after graduating she felt that to really make a carrer out of her art it needed to take a new form as more of a physical obejct that people could hold, share and that would have real space inside someones home. So she decided the next step would be to learn wood turning to create a utalitarian canvas for her paintings. Although Amy has been wood turning for a few years it was only in Febuary that she started her buisness after recieving an invitation from London design festival offering her a stand, that was when she really decided to take things seriously.
When working Amy takes joy and great comfort from the women she paints on her pots as she feels they express her and her feelings. Their creation will often stem from an incident that has made her angry, usually in the form of subtle and underhanded feminism she has witnessed throughout the day. She feels is still a very regular occurance and by painting these women who are strong and free she gets a great sense of satisfaction.
